Stalking the Wild Hamptons
Want to see the Hamptons on foot?
Besides strolling the Main Streets and country lanes, you can hike through local nature preserves including 200-acre Quogue National Wildlife Refuge (631-653-4771), which has a mile-long, self-guided trail into the Pine Barrens. Red Creek Park (631-283-6000, ext. 233) in Hampton Bays offers a chance to see pheasant, deer, blue heron and red-tailed hawk on a five-mile trail.
Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge (631-286-0485), overlooking Noyac Bay in Sag Harbor, is a haven for osprey and songbirds, and Hubbard Creek County Park hums with ducks, sparrows, wading birds and ospreys. The 724-acre Montauk Point State Park (631-668-2461) offers miles of duneswept nature trails ideal for spotting bald eagles and ospreys as well as seals in the winter.
